W-O-R-T-L-A-U-T
Just back from a weekend of literature at the Wortlaut literary festival in St. Gallen. The last time I was there, I was taking part, in Kultbau. I had been asked, along with 8 other people from the world of culture and politics, to read my favourite excerpt from Ulysses… We had a ball – didn’t we, Matthias! A week before the festival, the wonderful glove shop Böhni in St.Gallen, closed it’s doors forever and I had fortunately obtained a pair of cream coloured kid leather gloves at a scandalous price. I considered long and hard how to attract the attention of the audience, which was changing every half hour and decided to wear said gloves and to sit silently on stage and take them off at the beginning of the reading – I was after all reading the final three pages of Joyce’s Ulysses, Molly Bloom’s monologue and this deserved adequate attention!
I had just taken a year off from my Sociology studies, to read said tome and was accordingly impressed and inspired. How surprised I was to realize just last week, that that event had taken place in 2015 and thus a very long time ago indeed. This year’s theme was TRANSLATION, and being a literary translator, I secured an early bird pass. An early bird… das war ich noch nie!
The weekend kicked off with a talk in the Lok Remise – that’s the place where, once upon a time, the trains went to sleep and now, where independent films are shown and art and theater productions are regularly held… I have always adored trains and love the Lok Remise, so it was a great place to begin a weekend of words and authors and geschätzte Begegnungen… allerlei!
